Texans Defense Knows Tackling Is Key To Controlling Bills QB Josh Allen

As the Houston Texans prepare to take on the Buffalo Bills this Sunday at Highmark Stadium in Buffalo, New York, they know that on the defensive side of the ball they must stay disciplined.

Missed tackles were one of the main reasons the Carolina Panthers and Cleveland Browns were so successful against the Texans in back-to-back weeks.

“Tackling is critical,” said Texans defensive coordinator Lovie Smith. “It’s critical each week. You have to keep those explosive plays to a minimum and that normally says something about how you tackle and whether you get them down, yards after contact. We didn’t do as good a job as we need to last year in that area but hopefully, that will be the case this week.”

Houston will face one of the NFL’s most high-powered offenses led by quarterback Josh Allen who has 807 yards passing, 7 touchdowns, and only 1 interception this season. Although Allen has one of the strongest arms in the league, it is his ability to run the ball effectively when he gets out of the pocket that concerns the defense.

Allen, 25, is second in first downs gained for the Bills, with 10 that all came by way of running the ball.

“When a quarterback runs you have to have eyes on the ball,” Smith emphasized during his weekly press. “Josh Allen won’t surprise us. We know what kind of athlete he is, got excellent speed, he’s a big target, and likes to run. Of course, he’s a passer but they have designed runs. We are going to see a quarterback draw different times in the game and that’s just what we have to prep and be ready for.”
