The Prairie View A&M football team is putting opponents in the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) on notice that they are on the hunt to become conference champions at the end of the season.

After ruining homecoming for the Southern Jaguars last weekend in a 48-21 blowout win in Baton Rouge, the Panthers improved to 5-0 in the conference and 6-1 overall on the season. That record also includes a five-game winning streak, which is the longest in the SWAC this season.

Prairie View will get a chance to get healthier and improve on some things that were lacking this past Saturday as they head into a bye week before taking on Alabama State University at Blackshear Field for homecoming on November 6.

“It helps in all different phases,” said PV head coach Eric Dooley about his team’s second bye week this season. “We always try to look at the positive side. We are going to continue to work on Prairie View and try to fix some of the things we have an opportunity to be better at.”

One area where the Panthers thrive is on the offensive side of the ball. They currently lead the SWAC in total offense averaging 446.3 yards a game. Most of those yards come from Louisville transfer quarterback Jawon Pass who ranks third in the conference with 260 passing yards per game and 13 touchdowns this season.

“You can see his maturity,” Coach Dooley responded when asked to describe his dynamic quarterback. “He is knowledgeable enough and intelligent enough to correct any mistake he makes. That young man is doing extremely well for us, and I still believe he has another level he can go up to. He just has to continue to work hard.”

Prairie View will need to come out of the Alabama State game with a victory and healthy. They head into back-to-back weeks against tough opponents Alcorn State and Texas A&M. If they come away from those games with at least a split, they could be well on their way to a December 4 showdown with the winner of the East Division of the SWAC.
